History, Mission, Commitment
On March 30 th , 1957, five volunteers delivered the Articles of Incorporation for the James City Rescue Squad. Those articles were signed into effect and the certificate was ordered on May 7 th of that year. Those five members served as the first board of directors and they formed a corporation whose purpose was “to serve as a county and community rescue squad providing free emergency services, including ambulance and first aid service and any other emergency services the corporation is or may be equipped to render”. That was almost 60 years ago, and although may things have changed within the county and the organization, our mission remains much the same.
The mission of the James City Volunteer Rescue Squad is to provide outstanding emergency medical services, public education, and emergency medical training to citizens in the County of James City and surrounding areas, in a professional manner while maintaining the dignity of those we serve.
Our commitment to service implores us to provide quality pre-hospital care and life safety while treating individuals with illness and injury in our community with care and compassion, utilizing effective principles and practices of patient care, and we strive for excellence through ongoing evaluation and improvement. We will be responsive to the needs and priorities of our community and the residents we serve.
We recognize the dignity of others and communicate with others in a respectful manner. We serve with honesty, loyalty, and dedication. We are responsible for our actions, both positive and negative, and we practice teamwork through communications and cooperation to achieve common goals.
We shall not participate in unethical behaviors or procedures, and shall assume the responsibility of exposing incompetence or unethical conduct of others to the appropriate authority in a proper and professional manner.
We do not discriminate against patients on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, sex, age, disability, political belief, military service, or financial standing.
