PLEASE NOTE: ALL QUESTIONS WITH AN ASTERISK MUST BE ANSWERED IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY "SEND" YOUR APPLICATION.
We thank you for your interest in joining the James City Volunteer Rescue Squad (JCVRS). Please remember that becoming a volunteer requires a significant time investment but can be a very rewarding experience. Any person is eligible to apply for membership provided that the applicant meets the following criteria.
There are several types of membership. These are outlined below.
Active Member: Active membership is for those applicants who have already completed or are currently enrolled in a Virginia or National Registry EMT level or higher course. All active members of the Rescue Squad are required to attend scheduled general meetings, monthly trainings and support fundraisers and special events while maintaining minimum EMT certification. All active members are required to log 16 volunteer hours per month as station EMS support.
Student Member: Student membership is for those applicants who have already completed or are currently enrolled in a Virginia or National Registry EMT level or higher course, AND who are current enrolled in High School or a higher learning institution and feel that they may not be able to meet all of the commitments of an Active Member. Student members shall participate in 50% of Active Member required hours, 50% of Active Member required meeting attendance, 100% of Active Member required trainings, and 1 of either an annual special event, or a fundraiser, where a minimum of 4 hours of attendance is required. Student members shall provide proof of current enrollment status at the beginning of each academic quarter.
Associate Member: Associate members are those who are interested in assisting the Rescue Squad with fundraising functions and special events. Associate members MAY NOT participate in operational rescue activities, nor will they be required to receive EMS training. This is a non-voting membership.
Administrative Member: Applicants who are interested in the administrative roles of the Rescue Squad who do not wish to participate in operational activities are eligible for administrative membership. Applicants must possess knowledge, skills and abilities that can enhance the organization at the administrative level. All administrative members of the squad are required to attend fifty (50) percent of all scheduled meeting and must volunteer a minimum of twelve (12) hours per month.
ALL MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING ALL REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN MEMBERSHIP. JCVRS IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING MEMBERS' CERTIFICATIONS.

- has a minimum of EMT OR HIGHER certification or be actively enrolled in a State or National Registry EMS class, and if already certified, your certification has AT LEAST 6 MONTHS before expiration,
- be at least eighteen (18) years of age,
- read and follow the directions to obtain a background check as instructed by logging onto the VA Office of EMS at https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/emergency-medical-services/regulations-compliance/fingerprinting/, (YOU WILL BE DIRECTED WHEN TO DO THIS. DO NOT GO TOTHE VA OEMS SITE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK UNTIL INSTRUCTED BY THE MEMBERSHIP TEAM).

Application process.
Acceptance in the Rescue Squad is dependent upon completion of the application, submission of all on-line requirements listed below, and our receipt of request for Agency Affiliation followed by satisfactory results from the background check through the Office of EMS portal.

- Current State of VA driving record or a driving record from current state. If no VA state driving record is available, one must be submitted within 60 days,
- Copy of driver's license,
- Copy of EMS Certification and BLS for Healthcare providers (AHA) (CPR) certification. If your certification is due to expire within 6 months of this application, you must provide proof of AT LEAST 80% of necessary CEU's in order to recertify.
- Proof of complete ICS on-line courses listed below,
- Any other certifications (ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, PEPP, EVOC, etc.),
- Proof of following immunizations/titers:
- Measles (Rubeola) - 2 vaccinations or a positive antibody titer,
- Mumps - 2 vaccinations or a positive antibody titer,
- Rubella (German Measles) - 2 vaccinations or a positive antibody titer,
- Varicella (Chicken Pox) - 2 vaccinations or a positive antibody titer,
- Hepatitis B - 3 vaccinations (or in process) or a positive antibody titer or declination),
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) - Tdap of Td booster within past 10 years,
- Polio (if over 18 years old) - 3 vaccinations or positive antibody titer,
- Influenza - During flu season, as recommended. If declination, must wear mask,
- TB skin Test - 1 step annually, 12 months or more since PPD, 2-step required (During shortages of T-spot, IGRA blood draw may be required.
- COVID-19 immunizations/boosters.
- Obtain medical clearance from MD (or PA).

Please place your completed documents into a sealed envelope and mail them to JCVRS, PO Box 321, Toano, VA 23168. DO NOT BRING THIS PACKET FOR DROP OFF AT THE STATION UNLESS DIRECTED BY A JCVRS MEMBER.
After your fingerprint results are received and your application has been reviewed by the Membership Committee, an in-person interview will be set up and you will be contacted by a member with further instructions. Based on your application packet and your interview, a recommendation will be made to the Board of Directors, followed up by a potential vote for membership by the General Membership.
